New York
New York is fire largest city and port in the USA. It is the industrial and cultural centre of the country. It is the financial and business centre of the western world. It is also the centre of the political life, mass media and the world’s biggest bank centre. New York is the economic capital of the USA with the population of over 11 million. There are many interesting sightseeings in New York. They are the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Broadway (non-sleeping street), the United Nations Building and others.
New York is called “Big Apple" because of numerous emigrants who came to the city looking for a better life as if stretching out a hand for a big and red apple.
The Statue of Liberty is a splendid statue, which stands on a small island of Manhattan at the entrance to New York Harbour. The figure shows a young woman freeing herself from shackles. She holds a torch in her right hand and in her left hand there is a tablet with the date “July 4,1776“ on it, which symbolizes the Declaration of Independence. The torch lights up at nights. In 1884 France presented the statue to the USA as the symbol of friendship.
