This reputation, together with many historic buildings has led to its being called “The Athens of the North”. The annual festival of the arts is internationally famous. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities not only in Great Brit¬ain but also in Europe. It lies on seven hills and goes down those hills to the sea. Edinburgh is one of the largest industrial and cultural centers of Scotland. Many great men lived and worked there. Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet, published his first book of poems in Edinburgh. Walter Scott, the farther of historical novel in world literature, was born in Edinburgh.

Glasgow is the third largest city in Britain. It is associated with heavy industry and some of the worst housing conditions in Britain.
