1. When an author´s manuscript is accepted, the editor of the publishing house studies it in a variety of ways. NEWSPAPERS IN USA
Daily newspapers in USA total approximately 1,750. Over half of them are published in towns with less than 25,000 population. Only 125 or so newspapers in the nation have circulation of over 100,000.
There are 334 morning and 1,429 evening newspapers. The total daily newspaper circulation is over 62,000,000. Why do they publish only 586 newspapers on Sundays? The sabbath edition is a unique package. It has more pages and sections than its weekday one. Economics is the primary answer. Small towns have to compete with the major metropolitan papers. The latter have more money, larger staff and the best machinery.
Some people subscribe only to the Sunday issue; some subscribe only on weekdays. The total Sunday circulation is almost as large as the total daily circulation, some 50,000,000 copies.
Small town newspapers average 8 to 16 pages per day, whereas metropolitan dailies average 47 pages per day. Sunday issues average 145 pages. The content of the dailies averages over 60 percent advertising and less than 40 percent news, features and editorials.
The average amount of time a person devotes to daily newspaper reading ranges from 20 to 35 minutes. Most people read the front page as a matter of patriotic duty. It is the obligation of the intelligent citizen today to stay informed. Often one cannot participate in conversation unless he has read the newspaper of that day.
According of the Continuing Study of newspaper Reading, men read 14 percent of the total newspaper each day, and women score 3 percent less. Women do represent a higher percentage of readership in some education brackets.
