AUTHOR
1. Authorship is essentially an individual thing. Authors are born, not made. Most authors know that they will one day be writers very soon after they have given up ambitions to drive railway trains or pilot space - ships. The author is the man who is abnormally obsessed with the mysteries of human behavior and the desire to communicate to his fellows in fitting language his sense of the mystery. Men of this type are always with us, though the forms their expression of the mystery take change with the centuries and with new developments in the media of communication. Such men may learn by trial and error, but they cannot be taught it.
2. The author´s education is private and personal; it begins at the moment when he is first aware of himself and other people; and his work as a writer is unremitting, so that he is perhaps never so busy as when he appears most idle. His stock-in-trade is himself, and all he needs to practise his trade is paper, pen and ink, though he will be well advised to see that what he has transcribed in ink is later presented to publishers in typewritten form.

EDUCATIONAL PUBLISHING IN GREAT BRITAIN
Great Britain is one of the few countries in the world of today in which teachers are completely free to choose for themselves the textbooks best suited to their own methods and their pupils´ needs, and to choose from an almost unlimited range issued by independent publishing firms. Even in the commonwealth this is not always the case. In New Zealand, for instance, the Government publishes the school books for use in certain grades and for others issues a list from which teachers normally have to choose. Most Australian States have a similar system and in Canada the selection is done by textbook committees. There are many countries in which all school textbooks are published and prescribed by the Ministry of Education.
Educational publishing in Great Britain has developed into a specialized and highly competitive branch of publishing. The first thing which the educational publisher has to do is to find out what teachers require; for there is no magic formula. He must take care to keep abreast of educational movements and trends in teaching methods, to maintain contacts with teachers and inspectors, to read periodicals, and to study the reports of his representatives who visit schools. But in the end, of course, everything depends upon his own knowledge, experience and judgement.
