Coding video signals
Composite video signals for colour television contain a luminance signal, together with colour components modulated onto quadrature sub carriers at 4.43MHz. Since the total bandwidth exceeds 5MHz, it might appear that the sampling frequency must exceed 10MHz. However, the spectrum about the colour sub carrier frequency is concentrated in lines at intervals equal to half the line repetition frequency. This enabled a lower sampling rate, fs, to be chosen, such´ that the aliases from those lines above fs/2 fall into gaps in the spectrum below fs/2 and can be removed by comb filtering.
A sampling frequency of 8.86MHz and 8-bit encoding gives a digit rate of about 70Mbit/s. In practice, 68Mbit/s is used, but addition of error protection increases the digit rate further. The CCIR has recommended that 140Mbit/s transmission be used in order to provide a higher quality than that provided by analogue transmission.
A number of techniques have been developed to reduce the band¬width required for a 70Mbit/s video signal. Differential PCM can be used instead of conventional PCM. With non uniform quantisation, 4 to 6 bits are sufficient for the luminance signal and 2 to 4 bits for the colour information. This enables 34Mbit/s to be used for pro¬gramme quality signals or 8Mbit/s for video telephony.
More complex coding techniques have been developed to achieve further bandwidth reductions. For example, the appli¬cation of conditional replenishment and motion prediction enables the digit rate to be reduced to about 384kbit/s.The performance obtained is adequate for colour video conferenc¬ing applications.
